Though avocado toast has become something of a cliché, it's popular for a reason—a slice of hearty toast spread with creamy avocado, drizzled with a bit of olive oil, and sprinkled with salt makes a simple, filling, and tasty snack (or breakfast!). If you need a little more excitement than what the basic formula offers, we've got plenty of different ways to give it a twist. One of our favorites is this bright vegan version, which gets its springtime vibe from sweet baby peas, slivers of crisp radish, and fresh basil.
But it’s far from slim pickings when it comes to vegan snacks that are meat-, dairy-, and egg-free. We’re here to dig you out of your hummus-and-carrots rut with 19 sweet and savory vegan recipes that take less than 10 minutes to put together—because really, when that mid-morning crash, afternoon slump, or post-dinner pang hits, who wants to wait longer than that?
Low-Carb Tortilla and Cheese – Low-carb tortillas can truly be a life-saver on the ketogenic diet, and there’s almost no quicker hot snack than a cheese roll-up.  Throw your favorite cheese in, toss some spices on (we love pepper jack cheese and a little bit of cayenne pepper to spice things up), microwave it until melted, and enjoy.  Mama Lupe’s tortillas are near indistinguishable from normal tortillas, as are the Low-Carb tortillas from Mission.  Most supermarkets seem to carry a low-carb option or two in their tortilla department nowadays, so add it to your grocery list.
You should always have carbohydrate-based emergency snacks on hand for when you feel oncoming symptoms of hypoglycemia. Unlike meal plan snacks, emergency snacks should be free of protein and fat to allow the quickest absorption of glucose. An initial emergency dose of glucose to treat hypoglycemia is usually 10 to 15 grams. That can be found in:
This makes a great snack or even healthy dessert. Try adding a slice of banana and sprinkling it with cinnamon and cacao for a decadent, raw vegan snack. I often eat this for dessert to satisfy sweet tooth. Almond butter, tahini, peanut butter, sunflower seed butter or any other nut or seed butter are also delicious options! If you want to get really fancy, how about some Peanut Butter Mousse Stuffed Dates?
Thanks for the links Celeste. One article says ALA can have anti-cancer properties (with regard to breast tissue). Another says ALA may reduce risk of heart disease while it could be a risk factor for prostate cancer. Confusing! The studies are 6-9 years old, so I’d be interested in seeing if more recent research has been done on this topic. It’s definitely worth looking into. Thanks for passing them along!
Not by much, but it’s true! According to the United States Department of Agriculture, 1 ounce (28 grams) of popcorn contains 0.9 mg of iron, while 1 cup of raw spinach (30 grams) has 0.8 mg. These numbers seem small, but adult men only need 8 mg of iron in their diet each day. Adult women, on the other hand, need 18 mg per day (because of the blood they lose during menstruation). Almost 10 percent of women are iron deficient, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. So get your fill of iron however you can. Raw Coconut Butter — This is made from blended coconut meat, and provides us with a delicious way to get plenty of coconut fat without missing out on our favorite coconut flavors. Make sure the coconut butter you find has no added sugar — and, most importantly, don’t overdo it. Coconut butter is packed with calories, which can slow your weight loss.
One is sweetened with maple syrup (or any liquid sweetener), and the other is sweetened with jam. I used a fruit juice sweetened jam in my fave flavor–blueberry. I am partial to the jammy version as it has better texture and extra fruit flavor, but I wanted to give you options. Plus some flavors (ahem…orange) aren’t easy to find in a jam. Both of the recipes can serve as templates for making any flavor you like. Just switch up the type of juice or jam and you can have snacks of just about any fruity sort.

Snacks can absolutely fit in your diet if you're trying to lose weight. Having ideas for healthy snacks to pack for work snacks, grab and go snacks, store-bought snacks and snacks you can make yourself will help vary the nutrients you get and keep you from going hangry between meals. Remember, think nutrient-dense (fiber, protein, vitamins, minerals) and your snacks will help you get the nutrition your body needs and keep you full.
You can put way more on popcorn than just butter and salt. Add cinnamon or apple pie spice for a sweet treat, or go spicy with hot sauce, wasabi, or curry. You can also give your snack an Italian flair with grated Parmesan and a dash of olive oil. Basically, anything in your spice rack can add more flavor without very many calories when you’re eating popcorn. Your meal plan will tell you how many servings of carbohydrates, protein or fats you should have for your snack. The best meal plan snacks usually combine lean proteins or healthy fats with 15 to 30 grams of high-fiber carbohydrates such as fruit, vegetables, and whole grains. This combination of nutrients slows digestion and causes a more gradual rise and fall in blood sugar.
A heaping bowl of comfort food is a healthy way to start your day, especially if the idea of quick sugar fixes like cereal just isn’t your thing. To make things speedier, make the oatmeal the night before or on the weekend in a big batch. Then portion out enough for your day. When you’re ready to eat, you need only focus on poaching your egg, which makes this incredibly hearty and healthy breakfast easy enough for a weekday.

Packed with fiber, water, and antioxidants, fruits and vegetables are great choices for diet-friendly snacking. But the standard banana or carrots and ranch dip can get old quick. Instead, try a sliced apple with a lowfat cheese wedge, like Laughing Cow Light. "Having a little extra fat is good in a snack because it sustains you longer," says McLachlan.
